assignment 3 consists of story telling through 8 photos without any captions to explain it. therefore, the story must be clearly communicated pictorially. although it is a photo story, the story should have the basic elements of a story, such as introduction, rising action, climax, falling action and the highlight of this assignment: a twist in the ending.
it was really hard to think of simple, uncomplicated storylines that would not involve too many props or characters and that would look visually appealing. i wanted a story which wouldn't be too cliche, too straightforward, too predictable, and i wanted the twist ending to be funny. first, view the photos on my lj as they are, and when you're done looking at the entire story, you can click on the cuts below each photos for my explanations on my creative process (:
this scene should basically introduce my characters and establish their relationship with one another. i wanted my first few scenes to be very typical "couple" scenes, something that you would see in Chinese or Korean dramas, to lead the unsuspecting viewer into the assumption that this will be just another cliche story. hence i directed my subjects such that they should have happy expressions on their faces, and i wanted them to hold hands in one way or another to obviously convey their relationship. the location in which this photo story was taken was not my original choice (sentosa beach was my original choice, but on the day of the shoot, it was raining, so i had no other choice but to relocate), but the green grass and homely HDB blocks nearby should convey a positive, comfortable atmosphere.
this scene is essentially the start of the rising action. the girl is beckoning to the guy to chase her. what else is there for a couple to do on such a glorious piece of grassy land?! the hand gesture on the girl's part should communicate clearly that she wants him to follow or chase her.
they're starting to have fun chasing each other. rather than placing them in a centralised position within the photo like i did with the first two, i decided to place them on extreme opposite ends of the photo, so as to emphasize the negative space in between.
the negative space in between is now closing up as the guy joyfully runs towards his girlfriend who awaits him with open arms. (HAHA) i purposely placed the girl on the extreme right and closer with her back to the camera so i could get a more or less threequarter to front profile view of the guy and his expression.
i keep the perspective consistent with the previous one while the gap between the guy and the girl closes a little but more. but as he comes closer, his expression changes to one of horror...while the girl is still happily waiting for him to run into her arms... this is the CLIMAX!
he runs PAST her and she is aghast... she wanted to relive those Korean drama moments for herself... what is this! what is this dude doing! why is he running away from her with that horrified expression of his? in this particular photo, the guy is deliberately positioned much closer to the camera than the girl, to emphasise the distance that is now in between them and also to point out that he is now the major character of the scene and following scenes.
STOP THAT PARKING ATTENDANT!!! oh no... he forgot to put his parking coupon... it is a high price to pay for 15 minutes of glorious chasing on beautiful green grass tsktsk...
do they live happily after? we will never know :O all we know is, parking fines in singapore are SUPER ex!!! and that practical reality very often overrides the romantic dreamy quality of life. sigh.
yes, "we love singapore" is my title, pun and irony intended! haha. also, if you noticed, both my characters are in red and white, the HDB blocks are almost always in the background, and the scenery is all so green and grassy. hehe.
how did u like it? did u get what story i was trying to tell? :D
