my exact same sentiments !!

i felt like the director just hiked a camera into a live performance of Chicago and filmed it. It doesn't make sense to film it almost exactly like the way it's played out on stage ... he should have integrated the song and dance segments right into the movie plot itself, rather than have the scripted plot segue abruptly into stage sequences.

oh...stumbled upon your LJ from sg-ljers :)

Wahhh....I guess it's really different watching a movie as a common audience and as a film critic. I thought I pretty enjoyed the movie, though it gotten a little draggy at times.

And Catherine Zeta Jones has such nice eyes!! Hope she gets the oscar.

On the same subject of musicals brought to screen, I think I never really found out how you liked Evita.

Actually, can't recall - think overall it was good... cinematography, costumes... didn't really like Antonio Banderas tho'. And Madonna looked really hard with her muscles etc, bit off for that era hehehe. But at least Alan Parker (he directed right?) used all the cinematic tools e.g. multiple locations, massive crowd scenes, inter-cutting, etcetc to tell the story too.

I watched Chicago the musical, and from what I can tell, the locations aren't particularly extensive. It mostly depended on snazzy choreography and clever lyrics, but the sets really left much to be desired. Whereas in the case of Evita, the scope of the story was simply epic in proportions (national politics, union protests, military coups...), thus Alan Parker had many options for locations and editing when adapting it for film.

so you're saying the limitations are in the script, not the director?... hm. you've got a point.. but still.. I felt that he had one foot in 'realism' and the other in 'OTT-dom'... overall feel wasn't quite there. But in the musical, the sets were pretty good actually. the one i saw anyway.

Evita felt right cos most of the time it was pretty grounded, and Moulin Rouge was so OTT that it worked. this one, he's neither here nor there.
