My last good nerve....its not very good.
I acknowledge that I live in a small town. However, our post office is a reasonable size building with not one, but TWO windows for the unfortunates who can't mail things from a office (like me) but must warily tread the murky postal service waters. Now, I had to make such a trek on my lunch today to mail a textbook I sold on half.com. (thank you 
smiley7613 for sharing that site with me) because I had to purchase something to mail it in. In trying to fit the book into the next to largest padded envelope, I sorta, kinda ripped the edge, just a little. I told the girl behind the counter (who used to work with me) "Hey Carol, this isn;t gonna fit and I don't need it can I put it back?" She shrugged and continued helping a woman who may have birthed Methusalah.
I get the biggest size and after adressing the envelope I am dismayed to see the crowd has grown larger while I was busy. Now we have Methusalah's mother, a second grader, (I know because she told everyone), another lady on her lunch, a black guy, and a woman between my age and old as dirt.
I am in between the lunch-time lady and the old-as-dirt lady. BTW Methusalah's mom is STILL filling out her card for something or another. As we all stand there quietly seething, the postmistress of this little kingdom saunters by, sees a line 6 people long, picks up an armful of magazines and her cup of coffee and gaily proceeds to her office. Leaving Carol to work the front desk alone, with a "Closed" sign on the other table.
There are others in the post office. I can hear them, maybe I even smell them. Maybe its not their day to wait on customers. Here is my problem: What other business do you know of, excuses the boss from waiting on customers? Retail? No. Accounting? Hell No! This wouldn't even register on my radar except a couple of weeks ago, I went into this post office on a Saturday, (they are only open a half day on Sat.) to mail some paperbacks. Carol was at the counter, people were starting to line up, and this same woman would NOT lower herself to help anyone. I just don't understand.
Its people like this post mistress that gives government workers a bad name.
