Sora doesn’t mean to fall asleep. No, really she doesn’t. It’s just…this is one of her favorite places to be: on the beach, with the water lapping the shore nearby, and the endless blue sky over head.
(in her dream there is darkness, there is a Choice to be made, there are the words: spoken directly into her head, and there is the Nightmare made real)
She wakes slowly, lulled back to the real world by the hush of the nearby surf. There is a form looming and it is startling enough, unexpected enough that Sora gives a little squeak of surprise and sits up.
There is the sound of laughter and the form becomes two. Kairi and Riku exchange a look, wearing identical sly smiles.
“She’s so predictable,” says Kairi. He’s stage whispering behind his hand and winks once at Sora, to let her know it’s all in good fun.
Riku hums in agreement. “If there’s one thing you can count on Sora for, it’s being a lazy bum.”
“Well,” says Kairi. He stands and stretches his arms over his head. “I guess someone doesn’t care if we get the raft finished today or not.”
“That’s not it!” cries Sora. “There was this huge black thing, it swallowed me up and -“
Kairi places a warm hand against her forehead. “Well, she doesn’t feel feverish.” He declares.
“Maybe she’s still dreaming?” suggests Riku. She leans forward, rests her arms against Kairi’s shoulder as they both regard Sora warily.
“N-no, I’m not,” says Sora. She frowns, studying the ocean. “Or maybe I am. I dunno anymore.”
Another look exchanged between her friends. “Well then,” says Riku. “I guess you’ll just have to stay here. No crazies allowed on my raft.”
“Our raft.” Corrects Kairi.
“You guys aren’t being fair.” Sora pouts at them, blinking her big blue eyes as sadly as she can.
“Geh, stop it with the face.” Riku shoves a hand at her, yanking Sora’s cheek. “We won’t leave you behind.”
“We won’t be going anywhere to leave anyone if we don’t get a move on.” Kairi reminds, giving both girls a very stern look.
Riku tugs at Sora’s hair. “Race you,” she sing-songs.
Kairi sighs, rolls his eyes sky-ward with a look that seems to ask this is what you give me to work with before counting down, slowly, from three. “Go!” he calls, laughing as the girls kick up sand in their haste.
For one moment in time, the island is filled with the sounds of delight, of three friends enjoying the afternoon.
Sora and Riku collapse into a heap beneath the bridge, breathless as they wait for Kairi to catch up to them. He moves across the sand at a sedate pace, smile evident even from a distance.
“Hey,” says Riku. She twines her hand together with Sora, looks her best friend in the eye. “You really are okay?”
Sora grins and squeezes her hand in response. “I’m going to explore all the worlds with two of my favorite people. How could I not be?”
Later there is the darkness, the storm. The choice to be made and Riku’s hand, just out of her reach. Later there is Kairi, disappeared right into her arms and there is the Nightmare made real.
Later there are worlds to explore, and two favorite people to find.
