Characters: the original Traverse Town Trio: Leon, Aerith, and Yuffie
Everybody, at one point or another breaks down. It's a lesson hard learned. Something they watch each other go through time and time again. They can predict the hot spots for the darkness to appear; tell the difficulty of a battle just from a glance. These are the easy parts, like breathing. It's the hurt that they all carry that becomes ever so unpredictable.
Their emotional collapses do not come in the form of wailing sobs, or violent outburst. They do not have the luxury of such displays.
Aerith takes hers in the form of dreams. Every night when she closes her eyes all she can see are the faces of the people they were unable to save. She'll wake herself up at least three times a night, more if there was a loss that day, biting down a scream. This is for her to deal with, alone.
Leon cracked so long ago that he hid the person he had been. The one who could smile occassionally and had more than the default setting of "asshole". The others used to worry about him, in the beginning, but they understand self preservation so they accept this new incarnation of their friend and move on.
Yuffie, for her part, snaps in the quietest way. She ponders the "who" of heartless too much, wondering which person they were before. Wondering if she knew them once upon a sunrise. It's this thought process that she has to fight as she throws shuriken at empty yellow eyes. The creature isn't her father, mother, cousin, or friend. It's not, it's not, it's not is the mantra she created for herself. Even as she overlays familiar faces with those dark, moving voids.
