In Cod We Trust

Today and yesterday I was attending a conference here on cod farming. It was a good conference, with people from all over the place, including Ireland, Norway and Iceland. Lots of good and informative talks, and free food.

Tonight we had a free supper, and it was awesome. It was at the Geo Centre, and we ate under all the planets! Very cool! The meal was fantasic... a soup with mussels and cilantro, and then the main course was fresh farmed cod from our very own Newfoundland south coast! These cod came from the eggs produced at the Ocean Science Centre, where I raised my eggs too (and where I do all my work/research). It's cool to think that those teeny little eggs (1.5mm in diameter!) could grow into big 4kg cod. And the cod was really good, light and flaky and a really nice flavour. I can't wait til the province starts producing these fish on a commercial scale... I think we'll have a big market in North America if we can ever get the commercial production on the road.

Then for dessert we had chocolate cake and it was REALLY good. And it was all for free, provided by the conference sponser. Sweet!!

So it's been a good (and educational) couple of days. Even though I missed out on two whole days of working on my own thesis, it was definitely worth it! I'm happy.
