In particular: 'Our society will not reach consensus on this issue for a very long time to come. The way for homosexuals to have space in our society is to accept the informal limits which reflect the point of balance that our society can accept, and not to assert themselves stridently as gay groups do in the West...We must not import into Singapore the culture wars between the extreme liberals and conservatives that are going on in the US. '
This drove me crazy. Of course any form of debate must be an import from the west and be divisive to the community.
When is the government going to wake up and realise the Singaporeans can actually form their own opinions? If a Singaporean happens to agree with the UN's
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (articles

It's very insulting to be told that you have to accept the informal limits that society places on you and cannot assert yourself, stridently or otherwise. Did the civil rights movement accept the 'informal limits' of their society? Did women campaigning for the right to vote accept the 'informal limits' of their society? Do human rights activists in China and Burma accept the 'informal limits' of their society? No, they didn't and don't.
Why should we?
