FATNISS EVERDEEN SPEAKS
FERNANDO TORRES has revealed his debt to Liverpool FC and says the club remains “a big part” of his life.
The Spaniard left Anfield in acrimonious circumstances, completing a British record £50m move to Chelsea on the final day of the January 2011 transfer window, having informed the Reds of his desire to quit the club after three-and-a-half years on Merseyside.
He has since struggled for form at Stamford Bridge, though he collected FA Cup and Champions League winners medals last season, as well as winning Euro 2012 with Spain during the summer.
The 28-year-old, though, says he retains a strong affection for Liverpool. Torres scored 81 goals in 142 games at Anfield after moving from Atletico Madrid in 2007, and was hugely popular with supporters.
He maintains that the truth about his decision to leave the club is not yet fully known.
He told Spanish newspaper El Pais: “I owe Liverpool a huge amount. To the people, to the men in charge, to (Rafa) Benítez and his staff, to the city. A huge amount.
“Liverpool is a fundamental part of my life. They don’t remember me that way, but time will change that. I could not have chosen a better place to go when I left Atlético.
“I decided to leave because I had to take a step forwards. It wasn’t the best way to have gone but nor were things exactly as they were sold [to people].
“One day the truth will come out. In a sporting sense, nothing was happening; a new project was needed. We talked about that - about growth.
“My son is a Liverpool fan and he was already kicking a ball before he was one. He was born in the football city; he had no choice.”
The striker also hailed last month’s Hillsborough Independent Panel findings, which cleared Reds supporters of any blame in the 1989 stadium disaster, and has since been followed by the news that “the largest ever review of police conduct” will be held by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, and that fresh inquests into each of the 96 victims will be held, with the original verdicts of “accidental death” overturned.
“The other day when the news broke about Hillsborough, I felt emotional,” Torres said. “I have experienced that, I know what the people have been through, I have seen them cry. I’ve lived that, I made it mine.
“This has arrived too late but it’s another step [in the right direction]. And it is things like that that playing for Liverpool gives you: it’s a feeling.”
Liverpool Echo While I still make fun of him every now and then, I'd given up hating Torres ages ago. It's easy to hate Michael Owen because he's a perma-douchebag and he joined Utd...but with Torres it just seemed so exhausting. Nevertheless, I don't want him to have real success at Chelsea. I'm just well over being upset. So if this story is true, then it is nice to hear him speak these words. If he ever scores on us...it might be a different story, however.
