As promised...
(it's late so I waxed a little poetic here, hope y'all don't mind)
Clinging to the past does not do us any favors. Especially now, as our club's position is ever more precarious, as defeat becomes expected and we cry, or rage, or simply feel numb. While it does us no good to cling to history, however, there is much to learn from it. This night of six years past, I think, demonstrates a great truth about Liverpool Football Club. On paper, we were the worse team. In the first half we proved it, perhaps even beyond the already lowered expectations. To go down by three and claw one's way back up, not only against the scoreline itself but also against the feeling of hopelessness that goes with it, shows exceptional fortitude. In a word, it shows heart. I am very new to this club, and I came to it during what is shaping up to be a dark period. And yet, I've seen this heart on many occasions, in players and supporters both-- hearing the Away Kop last night in full voice was just one instance. There is no doubt that changes need to be made, and we all know what they are. But even moreso, we need to keep the faith in our club, to show the heart we showed to the world in Istanbul.
Now, on to the gifs!
In terms of fans, the game might as well have been at Anfield-- it's estimated that something like 60,000 scousers (!) got tickets.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN <3
Oh hey Kaká, SORRY WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO CRUSH YOUR HOPES/DREAMS BB
(here's the starting XI of both sides, to give a point of reference)
:)))))
Godspeed, gentlemen.
FIRST HALF
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death...
and within the first minute...
We too get shots at goal, but Milan gets even better looks. They dominate the game, especially the midfield.
Not too far in, and Harry Kewell is forced to leave the match because of a groin injury (not that surprising, as he was still recovering from previous problems). We're already down a sub, and it hasn't even been 20 minutes.
The 39th minute, Crespo off of Kaká's cross
and again in the 44th minute, Crespo from a beautiful ball by Kaká (who had an amazing game overall)
It is halftime. A 3-point deficit looms over Liverpool.
And still, the fans stand and sing You'll Never Walk Alone (the most moving instance of it I've experienced, despite the fact I first watched it all these years later).
SECOND HALF
...I will fear no evil: for I will Never Walk Alone.
Liverpool makes a substitution and changes their shape, putting three in the back and four in midfield.
Jerzy Dudek was fucking tremendous this match (you'll see plenty more of him later ;)
And less than a minute later...
YEAH BOY
THAT'S HOW WE DO
I will never get over his ability to lift a team. He was born to be our skipper <3333
Shortly after, minute 56
a lovely shot from Vladimír Šmicer (Kewell's sub) to put us one down
four minutes later, Stevie is fouled in the box-- Xabi steps up to the metaphorical plate
this is the most insane goal I have ever seen (WAY TO FOLLOW UP, XABI, YOU BEAUTIFUL MAN)
OH LORD don't choke him, we still need him!
:') we climbed that damn mountain
Needless to say, we hold on to the tie through full time, as well as two periods of extra time. I'm going to go to the penalties now, but not before showing another amazing Jerzy moment:
HE IS A FUCKING WALL.
Thing start off great for Liverpool, with Milan's first penalty-taker missing completely and Hamann making his. And then Pirlo steps up to face Jerzy:
NICE TRY.
It draws to an end with Liverpool having made 3 penalties, and Milan only 2, and their last man is on the line. This is Shevchenko, whom Jerzy has been denying all night.
:DDDDDD
Number five is ours, the trophy is at Anfield to stay, and we did it in perhaps the most improbable way possible.
I'm gonna let the rest of these speak for themselves.
I hope you guys enjoyed this. :)
