A Dream Within A Dream

A Dream Within A Dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

I just awoke from a really strange dream and it reminded me of this poem which is one of my favourites actually. It flows like the "surf-tormented shore" that Poe writes about and has this eerie vibe that I cannot explain. In grade 12 I wrote a melody and chords to the first stanza of this poem that fit it almost perfectly. It's too bad I didn't finish it because I built it up so much into a roaring climax that sounded a lot like Led Zeppelin's Kashmir. That whole song is a climax.

But essentially what I think Poe is saying is that we are not always in control of our lives because something is always a bit off. In his dream he could not save any sand from the water on this beach, and perhaps he related this to a part of own life that he could not control. Whatever the reason, I still love this poem ever since I read it and I present it here because I'm almost certain that we won't even touch it in class.

I hope everyone had some wicked vacation time but now it's time to buckle down and return to classes. Only 4 more months of school left!!! Think about that.
