To listen is very hard, because it asks of us so much interior stability that we no longer need to prove ourselves by speeches, arguments, statements, or declarations. True listeners no longer have an inner need to make their presence known. They are free to receive, to welcome, to accept.

I was in a situation last night, dinner with friends after our Sunday gig, and a man was there who has been pursuing me for a few months. I can hardly stand to be in his presence. He's misogynistic and verbally abusive. He doesn't listen at all... instead he spends his time coming up with his next response. When you point it out to him, he vehemently denies it rather than looking inward. His behavior makes me sick to my stomach.
