Offer: Fiction critique from a linguistic perspective

Jul 05, 2008 11:12

Offer: I will read your story or novel extract of up to 20,000 words (including any notes), OR your notes alone up to 10,000 words, and provide a thorough critique from a linguistic standpoint, covering the structure of any invented languages, the linguistic history and language contact situation of your world, and the social ins-and-outs of language use. I'll read original fiction or fanfic, though in fanfic, I can't promise to make canon language use make sense. :-)

In addition, if bidding reaches the Buy It Now price of $100, I will work with you to devise the rudiments of up to two invented languages, to include phoneme inventory, syllable structure, morphology and basic morphophonemics, sentence-level syntax, and whatever semantic oddities are important to your story.

Qualifications: I have an MA in linguistics, and I've had at least 'Structure Of'-level instruction in Spanish, German, Modern Icelandic, Old English, Old Norse, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, and Hittite, and a glancing familiarity with a few others. I used to teach a class on linguistics in SF and fantasy. And my favorite chapter of Lord of the Rings is Appendix E.

For a general taste of my language neepery, try this essay.

Contact: ellenfremedon [at] gmail [dot] com.

Delivery: I will have a 3-5 page editorial letter within two weeks from receiving your materials, barring major and unlikely crises.

If you get the language construction option, I will consult with you over email or IM within one week from receipt, and deliver my editorial letter and a basic grammar within a month of that consultation.

Minimum bid: $20.
Buy It Now: $100.
