The drill: a rec post consisting of one music video, one song, and one album all centralized around some vague theme.
So I just watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes in theaters (it was okay; Caesar was pretty awesome but I wasn't a fan of James Franco - his voiceovers particularly pissed me off ) and then Star Wars: A New Hope at home, so I'm on such a Sci-Fi Space (But Mostly Star Wars) kick right now. (To be fair, RotPotA isn't in space...at all...but the original is about astronauts who think they've found a new planet and such, so space is still perfectly valid).
MUSIC VIDEO:
Send My Love To The Dancefloor, I'll See You In Hell - Cobra Starship

The song has nothing to do with space. Or sci-fi. But the music video is a) hilarious, and b) ridiculous. Or maybe reverse those two. Anyway, we get an intro to our Hero's Story through scrolly text all Star Wars style, and then the lead singer of the band proceeds to be beamed up into a spaceship (run by the rest of the band). And then taught dance moves and how to party, or something, but it's set in a spaceship and it's silly and I kind of adore this music video.
SONG:
Starlight - Muse So this song could totally be, like, Caesar's song. Except for the part about him being on a ship, because there are no ships in RotPotA. And then this song could also be Luke Skywalker's song, except for the part where the ship is taking him away from people who care about him, because his uncle and aunt are already dead. And I suppose the person he's singing to here would be Leia, because Luke was all "she shoor is purty" in A New Hope, which is mildly squickish when you watch it knowing that they're, like, twins. But oh well. Oh yeah, and I love this song. It's actually one of my favorite Muse songs.
ALBUM:
I Have A Bad Feeling About This - FIVEOHfirst
First thing's first: these guys are huge Star Wars nerds. Their name, FIVEOHfirst, is from the Storm Troopers, who are the 501st Division. The album's name is from the most famous Star Wars quote ever that doesn't involve some usage of the words "the Force." And finally, the lead singer actually has the symbol for the Rebels tattooed on one bicep and the Alliance on the other. So yeah. Major Star Wars nerds. They actually even wrote a song called "Brobiwan-Kenobi," but it's not on this album.
But anyway, this album's pretty much about bad relationships and getting your heart broken and stuff, as much pop-punk with slight screaming tendencies bands write about. But I like the album. The singer's decent, the lyrics, while not incredibly ranged in subject material, are pretty good, and I enjoy the music. They do have a slight hard edge with the occasional screaming, but it's not much. I'd call it a pretty soft edge, myself. Oh, and it's quite a short album (six songs clocking in at just over 20 minutes), so I'd give it a listen if you have the time.
