I went to Bangor, which is the most dire, miserable place you can imagine, and I certainly never saw/heard of any of initiation ceremonies. Even in the rugby club. Usually it was just a pub crawl for the newbies to get to know everyone.

I think its baloney, I left last year and never heard about anything even cloe to that, I believe the trip down the pub is about the height of it when joining clubs or societies - fish and matches optional. My bro is a fresher in manchester uni this year and hasnt heard of anything like it either!

I don't recall anything like this from my limited experience of uni socities. But it could be more a feature of sports teams? For building solidarity or team spirit or something.

I remember when I was at university that the rugby team had initiation ceremonies which involved lots of beer and humiliation. Rugby players always seem to go in for that sort of thing anyway.

Apparently medical students are the worst for general drinking games and hellraising.
