Tea with Mussolini, 7pm Channel 4
The Pianist, 10:45, ITV1.
I would highly recommend both of these movies to anyone planning on staying in tonight. Both are based on true stories - I believe The Pianist slightly more than Tea with Mussolini.
Tea with Mussolini is about Franco Zefirelli's (who wrote and directed the movie) childhood, growing up in Fascist Italy living with several British women after his mother has died. I saw it a few years ago and I think it's a bit romanticised (as far as I remember), the story of a young boy living with Judy Dench, Cher, Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright. It's really long as well and I missed half of it last time so I'm looking forward to seeing the whole film this time!
Roman Polanski (he doesn't only sleep with young girls you know!) directed The Pianist, which is about (duh) a Polish Jewish pianist called Wladyslaw Szpilman (he's actually quite famous if you know anything about pianists), who narrowly escapes death at the hands of the Nazis about a million times. Adrian Brody won an Oscar for his performance as Szpilman, and in my opinion it was well deserved. I remember watching this movie when I was living in a dodgy block of flats... every time I heard people stomping up the stairs past the front door I thought the Germans were coming to get me! I really cannot recommend this film highly enough, I loved it and am really looking forward to watching it again this evening.
If anyone (for some mental reason) doesn't fancy The Pianist, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow is on Channel 4 after Tea with Mussolini.
