Last week was brutal, this week looking equally so...
But I've seen some beautiful things this weekend, and I'm sure it's enough to sustain me. Some of them include:
Yannar Mohammad speak, twice in two days, about feminist organizations working to protect Iraqi people. Seeing "one feminist with a big mouth" deliver dark humor and sarcasm, and hope above all, was inspiring.
A Team Cake gathering with Triple-Sec-spiked tea. Those kids are why I still go here.
A Kozol book discussion with free-thinking Marquette community members. Imagine! (And I was asked to provide music, so it was a conversation about inner city schools, white flight and social justice set to Ani DiFranco. Heck yes.)
A getaway to Kerida's fam's bed and breakfast half an hour north of Madison. Flippin gorgeous house, fantastic veggie food, and fam time. Haven't fam-ed in a while.
I have papers and projects and deadlines looming over me, but I'm really proud of the way I've learned to live in the moment and just love the people I'm around, enough to forget the stuff I'm supposed to stress over... 90% of the time. This morning I woke up making up to-do lists in my head, but breakfast got me over it.
As for my melancholy musings about where I could have been, and how I've been treated where I ended up... I already knew the answer:
If there was a better way to go then it would find me
I can't help it the road just rolls out behind me
Be kind to me
Or treat me mean
I'll make the most of it
I'm an extraordinary machine.
