I know I've ranted about the Night at the Museum franchise before (Hank Azaria as a pharaoh in the next one, kill me plz), but can I say this one more time?

But my (tofu) beef is with how oppressive and pervasive small-minded representations of people from certain groups or identities can be. I believe there is harm in that-how we perceive ourselves and others affects how we treat them, regardless of whether our perceptions are justified.
Maybe there's something in human nature that looks to rules to adhere to, because people DO absorb the bullshit stereotypes we see in the media, or in the jokes people make that reflect the media, or in the assumptions of society that have no basis in fact (or don't reflect the complexity and diversity of All People.)
I've known too many women with eating disorders because they hate themselves-not just because skinny women are idealized on TV, even though that's a part of it. But women have to be PERFECT in American/Western/Northern media-smart but not bitchy, sexy but not slutty, a good mom and a successful businesswoman... It's impossible, obviously, but that doesn’t mean we don’t expect ourselves to be this way. So we start hating/hurting ourselves. I know people with self-hate issues because of skin color/race, religion, sexuality, because they have this ideal or ugly stereotype in their heads, and reality doesn’t match up, and it’s confusing.
On a larger scale, the reason I harp on history, is because there is, actually, a national identity in this country. The US wins wars, is entitled to world resources, and is somehow BETTER than the other people in the world. So we can invade and bomb whoever the fuck we want to, because it’s who we are and we deserve nothing less. Ancient civilizations were all building up to us-they did look like us, you know. And everyone else is inferior, look at those starving Africans… ya dig?
It does feel so weird, though, to be an indebted young white American woman with no power, no career, no authority, etc., but know that people who look like me (kinda) run the world and use it as their candy store. The question of whether there is a white American culture is an interesting one, and I don’t know the answer. But I am NOT living the American dream-private lending companies have ensure that I do not, and probably never will. I’m a dumpster-diver and a scavenger with a BA in Journalism. Go effing figure.
