Chapter 5
Cold night. . .
True to his word, Adam refused to leave Kris even for one minute during the following night. But the thing that left Kris completely baffled was that Adam was the complete opposite of what Kris had thought he would be. Adam was kind and funny, and Kris found out that it was easy to talk to him, easy to laugh with him.
Adam asked servants to bring them food and drinks, and they talked for hours, until it was already the dead of night. Eventually, Kris forgot the situation they were in, and then, it was just the two of them chatting, without expectations, without fear. And every time Adam smiled, Kris found himself smiling too.
Yawning, Kris pulled at the edge of the large blanket Adam had draped over them, feeling how a new wave of tiredness took over his body. He was tired and achy, but this time, it was all laced in relief. The upcoming marriage ceremony still felt unnerving, but Kris wasn’t afraid anymore, not in a way he’d been before. Adam wasn’t the violent, cruel creature from his nightmares.
“We should get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long day,” Adam suggested, and Kris glanced at Adam, blinking heavily.
“I can’t believe it’s up to me to bring peace into the world,” Kris confessed quietly.
“Do you think you can go through the ceremony? And how does your head feel right now?” Adam questioned attentively, concern clear in his voice.
“My head feels better than my arm, and I know I can deal with the ceremony. It’s just that… it’s so weird that it’s all up to me, you know,” he answered, silently wondering if Adam was able to hear the slight panic behind his words.
Adam shifted, inching closer to him, and then, he took Kris’ right hand into his own, squeezing gently. When Kris felt the warmth of Adam’s fingers, he closed his eyes for a brief second, before opening them again and meeting the wolf’s gaze.
“I know what you mean. I’ve always wondered the same questions. Why is it up to me to fulfil the prophecy and make the final peace treaty with your king? But, in the end, the questions don’t matter. What matters is how we feel about the things we need to do,” Adam said, leaning in, so close that his warm breath was tickling Kris’ lips.
Adam was looking at Kris intently, cerulean eyes sparkling with something mysterious, and Kris could feel how a blush crept up his cheeks, no matter how hard he tried to control the reactions of his body. When Adam smiled once again, wide and genuine, Kris could feel how his heart skipped a beat inside his chest.
Before Kris was able to form a coherent sentence, Adam leaned in for a kiss.
The kiss was slow, gentle, sweet brushing of lips that made shockwaves travel from his lips to his groin. And when Adam’s hot, wet tongue traced the seam of Kris’ lips, urging him to open up, to let him in, all Kris could do was gasp, trembling violently as Adam deepened the kiss.
It was the first time Kris had ever kissed anyone. Adam was controlling the kiss, steering the movement of their lips and tongues with softness and skill that left Kris panting. He could feel Adam’s big, warm hand on his neck, the careful press of the King’s body against his own, and it felt like the world tilted on its axis. All he knew was that he was falling, falling hard.
Above him, Adam let out a soft sound, pulling back with one last brush of his lips, so that he could look into Kris’ eyes again. There was so much electricity in the air, an attraction so powerful, Kris felt like every nerve ending in his body was on fire.
Hesitance and hope shone brightly in Adam’s baby-blue eyes, in those stormy eyes that kept staring down at him, and Kris was completely speechless, shaken to the core.
“You alright?” Adam asked finally, and Kris smiled, chuckling a bit.
“You’re not what I expected you to be, that’s for sure. I’m really happy I was wrong.”
The resulting grin on Adam’s handsome face was pure gold, surprised and delighted.
“Is it alright if I stay? I can sleep on the couch,” Adam asked carefully, tone so hopeful that it made Kris’ heart clench.
“You can stay. And… I think we should sleep in the same bed since we are getting married tomorrow,” Kris replied nervously, biting at his own lower lip, casting his eyes down.
“Hey, baby, look at me,” Adam insisted, tilting Kris’ face back up with a gentle hand, and Kris met the werewolf’s eyes, butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
“It’s going to be alright. I promise,” Adam reassured him, and the tender words felt good while his injuries kept aching.
Kris watched as Adam got up, and then the wolf started undressing, stopping only when he was down to his underwear. No matter how much Kris tried, he could not tear his eyes away from the sight. Adam was gorgeous. With countless freckles all over his pale skin, legs that went on for miles, Adam looked unnaturally stunning.
Suddenly, Kris felt a cool breeze from an open window, and he shivered under the blankets.
“Cold?” Adam inquired as he climbed back into the enormous bed.
“Yeah, the nights are getting colder by the day,” he mumbled, hyperaware of the fact that the King was now next to him, half naked, and radiating heat.
Smiling, Adam came closer to him, pulling at the covers so that, finally, they were both under the same large blanket.
“I’m always warm, something you’ve probably already noticed. Is it alright if I held you? I bet your muscles are sore from all the things that happened today, and the warmth would help ease the pain a little,” Adam rambled, and the fact that the darker man sounded nervous made Kris feel a lot less anxious.
Kris nodded, and soon, he could feel how tender arms circled him, carefully pulling him closer, and closer still, until Kris could feel a naked, smooth chest against his bare back. He was happy he’d taken his shirt of the same time Adam had undressed because, undeniably, the heat felt heavenly on his bare skin.
It took a few minutes, but eventually, Kris relaxed in Adam’s hold, his breathing evening out as sleep loomed closer.
“I’ll be there every step of the way tomorrow. We’ll figure everything out.” The quiet, soft words were whispered against his ear, and it didn’t take long before Kris was sound asleep.
Sunlight was already seeping through the curtains the next time Kris opened his eyes. He was encased in Adam’s warm arms, and it felt so utterly comfortable that Kris didn’t want to move yet. He was still on his left side, his injured arm stretched next to him, and Adam was behind his back, skin on skin. Stretching, Kris moved so that he could see the wolf’s face, find out if he was awake or not.
Adam was awake, and he was watching Kris, lips curved in a beautiful smile.
“Are you ready to get married?” Adam whispered in a sleep-rough voice.
“Yeah, I think I am,” Kris breathed.
And it was the truth. Kris felt calm, certain in a way he’d never been before. He would survive the upcoming day. It was the following night he wasn’t so sure of.

A/N: Sorry for the delay. This chapter wasn’t as long as I originally planned. But I needed to divide it, since the next chapter will be told from Adam’s POV. I’ll finish chapter 6 and probably even chapter 7 (smex part) during the holidays and post them after Christmas. Also, I'm trying to post the last part of JOKFS before the year ends.
