We grew a carrot!

It seems the theme of our garden this year is "Surprise."

We planted carrots all the way back in March, yes we did. Not one of them grew, no they didn't. Well, I guess that's not exactly true. A few seedlings started, but then they died mysteriously. So we gave up and left the plot without any plants. A couple of weeds came up, but they were interesting so we left them.

Fastforward to August. Last week I decided to pull these weeds, and one of them was a big huge carrot! This sucker was fat. Imagine my surprise when it came out of the ground!!

Now, I grew carrots as a child, and I would wait patiently for the carrots to emerge. You knew they were ready to pick when you could see their orange tops pushing through the soil. No orange was visible at all on this carrot. Plus the top looked like it could be in the carrot family, but so did the weed next door and it was clearly not a carrot.

Alexis and I ate our surprise mega carrot tonight with dinner (which was squash curry from our previously mentioned mystery squash). I guess we really did have a surprise meal tonight.
