Great Big Sea was playing at Bumbershoot this Saturday and Alexis and Rachael and I went to see them. They were fantastic and fun, just as I'd imagined. But somehow, the ringleader of the group struck me as more odd than I could possibly have foretold.
He had longish hair and a couple of different personas. One was that he seemed like he could easily have been in a Christian rock band, especially with the fact that Great Big Sea plays two kinds of songs: 1)upbeat, fun folk songs from Ireland and Newfoundland and 2)sweetly sappy songs about how everything is perfect, beautiful, and full of light in life. I hadn't heard too many songs in the second category but I certainly did this Saturday.
The other weird bit is that he commanded the crowd to do things. In a very authoritative voice, he would call out, "Put your hands up. Put your hands up!" And then would rock out to a song, much the way that Jack Black of Tenacious D rocks out to songs - completely over the top. Which was not a problem, but was more amusing than anything. Well, besides being a bit out of place for a folk song.
So, in conclusion, Great Big Sea was a fantastic compilation of upbeat folk songs, Christian Rock, and Tenacious D. All in all, a good time was had by everyone.
