I don't know how to articulate my fondness for Texas. Well before my life shifted, leaving me in the center of this huge, diverse and beautiful state, I had this great respect for the Lone Star State. I was never sure why. Perhaps it was my unhappiness with my home state of Florida.
My mentor and greatest teacher is from a small town called Kima, just outside Houston and surrounded by oil refineries. He always spoke of Texas with enthusiasm and made sure that I got to visit it's three largest cities, to see Texas for myself. After those few trips to Dallas, Houston and Austin, I understood. While visiting Texas, I always felt a bit more connected to America, moreso than I ever did in South Florida.
After moving here to South Austin, I've really started to see the real Texas. It's so much more than what those visits led me to believe. The lush nature here in Central Texas was unexpected. The winding hills, with its creeks and waterfalls surprise me. Watching the fields change from dusty, dry grass to lush green, and then covered in wild flowers is amazing. Having done minimal exploration of the Hill Country, alone, I'm look forward to the opportunity ahead to spend more time criss-crossing Texas in my little car, my dog at my side.
This week, I've been daydreaming about taking a trip out to Big Bend National Park, to see the Chisos and the Guadalupe mountains. Click
