I've been having a great writing streak lately. I don't know if it is because I am inspired by the so many amazing stories around me right now or if it's just that time of my write-a-bit-don't-a-bit cycle that I've been on since...well, my entire writing life.
The amazing stories are all epics, at least my definition of epic.
One is a story about a magic horse and girl, but it isn't as simple as it sounds. This book is exactly the kind of story I always come up with but then chicken out of writing.
Another story is one of those great big sagas that involve other planets and wicked-cool magic; the kind that gives the imagination plenty of room to stretch out in. I always think I can write a story as big as this...but then I get bored of procrastinating :):)
A journal, aliens, and the end of the world...ingredients that were bound to end up in a story written in my family. My sister's book is the result of A LOT of hard work; the kind I haven't been able to put into any one story. Apparently, I have a short attention span. Who knew?
And then there's the stuff on tv. Great shows and amazing movies. I'm talking about August Rush right now. Some people really hate this movie, but I love it! I guess I can see where unimagintive people could look at it and see nothing but lameness, but it is one of the most inspirational movies I've ever seen. I guess because I beleive in the power of music, and also because I like to pretend the music is an anceint celtic magic that Louis didn't know he had and he passed it on to his kid. teehee The idea pleases the fantasy-nut inside of me. :)
This inspiration helped me expand on a piece that I write in WA. Now I have a short story that is currently in the shop to become a full-sized book. It's a lot of fun because I am going about this in n unusal process (which I think might be why I've had such luck!) I am trying not to write NOTES on the ideas, but write only scenes that are meant to depict the facts I am coming up with for this new world....
It's certainly getting more prose out of me than ever, but I happen to know that I am a Planner. I need a plan. A schedule. An outline. So far I've been limping by on the "Just Write and See" course of action. My sister and I have finally pin-pointed the reason behind my lack-o-progress in any of my novels.
I can't change my ideas.
Anything I think is worth writing to begin with is worth NOT changing. This is why I have over a hundred WIPs and no finished draft that I could send into a publishers. Meanwhile, my sister is changing a core-element of her story every other day and finishing her second book.
So what I vow to work on is allowing the river to take the course it wants to take--the river in this metaphor being my new epic staring the most gothic character I've ever created.
