Fandom: Bleach

Summary: His head appeared over the edge, looking decidedly unimpressed at Renji’s staring. “We’re going to miss it if you don’t hurry up.” he stated softly, flatly.
Author's notes: Written for echoinautumn's prompt "Moonset".

“Come on!” Izuru called as he swung himself up onto the roof of the division building, seeming to effortlessly pull himself up with one graceful leap and two kicks to the wall, disappearing onto the red tiles with barely a scramble at all. Or so it seemed to Renji, anyway.

His head appeared over the edge, looking decidedly unimpressed at Renji’s staring. “We’re going to miss it if you don’t hurry up.” he stated softly, flatly. And then he was gone again. Renji could hear delicate feet picking their way across slanted tiles, finding a good place for them to sit. There was little sound, but Renji could pick it up in the silent night and he grinned; Izuru was always much more light footed than him.

“I’m coming!” he answered belatedly, taking a step back so that he could have a short run-up to the wall. “We’ve got plenty of time!” They did, and there was no answer, though he knew Izuru had heard him. Renji was sure his own ascent was much more awkward than Izuru’s had been, but then no-one had ever complimented him for being ‘graceful’ anyway.

Hauling himself onto the roof, Renji promptly lost his footing. His leg skittered away from under him, but he gritted his teeth and held on, scrambling onto the roof. Looking up quickly and standing, he waited for Izuru to laugh, but Izuru was too busy staring up at the moon to have noticed. “Don’t know why we’re doing this anyway.” he muttered, to himself and Izuru didn’t seem to hear him.

Renji crossed to him, slowly and with louder steps than Izuru had, grumbling under his breath. Izuru sat half way across the roof, arms around his knees, presumably to keep him as warm as possible. It wasn’t until he thumped down beside him, almost sliding forward down the slope but digging his heels in to stay in place, that Izuru finally turned his head and smiled. His eyes were back on the sky almost too quickly for Izuru to see Renji’s answering grin, but Renji didn’t mind; Izuru was beautiful this way.

He was so glad that he’d sat on Izuru’s right. Blue eyes, neither obscured by his hair, gazed steadily at the moon, it’s soft light held there, making them shine and almost seem to reflect back. A reflection of a reflection. Renji mused, and almost laughed, but he didn’t want to break the moment. Reluctantly breaking eye contact, not that Izuru knew they had held it, Renji refocused his gaze. He had something better than the moon to look at tonight. The pale light washed colour from everything around them, the black that they wore seeming starker in comparison. Izuru’s hair was less golden, more soft than by the harsh light of day. Renji liked seeing him properly, but this different look was just as good and he took the opportunity to study it.

“We’re doing this,” Izuru’s quiet voice startled him at first, and Renji then reddened a little as he realised Izuru had heard him. “Because I like to watch the moon set.”

Kuchiki-taichou had made him stay behind to catch up on some paperwork Renji had forgotten - honestly forgotten, it had been hidden in a drawer he hadn’t opened in days! - and on his way back, finally, to bed Renji had seen that the light was still on in the 3rd division’s office too. Ichimaru-taichou wasn’t there, surprisingly, but Izuru was, working diligently away at the papers on his desk. In the short time Renji had stood the in doorway, Izuru had suppressed a yawn twice.

They’d discussed this. Over and over, usually when Izuru was a little drunk. Izuru, apparently, didn’t mind. Renji would have called bullshit on that, but his friend wouldn’t have liked it. So he kept quiet, and tried to make sure Izuru got to bed at a reasonable hour.

Tonight, when Renji had suggested they lock up and leave the rest for the morning, Izuru had been shocked to see how late it was. He had done as Renji suggested, but insisted they do this one last thing before leaving.

So now they were here. It was past 1am on a cold January night and they were sat, shivering, on a roof. Watching the moon. It wasn’t that far away from the horizon now, admittedly, but Renji still thought Izuru had some odd whims at times.

“Why?” The soft question almost surprised him, definitely surprised Izuru, who looked back at him. His questioning glance changed to a gentle smile after a moment, and he glanced back to the moon.

“Some nights, when I stay to finish the paperwork that has to be in by the next morning,” his voice was barely above a whisper, Renji used it as an excuse to shuffle closer. “The moon is my only companion, looking in through the windows to watch over me. It’s become a ritual for me: I pack up as the moon sets, during these winter months anyway, and come up here to watch before I go home. It stops me from overworking myself. And helps me calm down.” Another smile, more of a grin that time; Izuru knew Renji still worried about him.

There was a moment, Izuru’s head tilted back, gaze flickering from him to the moon as he waited for Renji to dismiss him as ridiculous, when Renji entertained the brief, fleeting idea of kissing him. It was gone almost as soon as it had come, and Renji looked away, scuffling his feet against the roof tiles.

“You, uh, you gotta do this again, you call me, got it? Don’t want you staying here all alone.” he said gruffly, clearing his throat and reddening slightly. “I won’t mind.” Izuru laughed, head falling back as he slid his hands out behind him and rested his weight on them, legs stretching out in front, - and still not slipping even an inch - a long, low, delighted laugh that Renji couldn’t help grinning at.

It was then that the urge returned. Renji’s grin faded, Izuru not noticing, so damned beautiful with that smile on his face. Fuck it. He decided after an agonising moment, leaning over until his head was inches from Izuru’s to gaze into those deep, blue eyes. Izuru’s smile faded a little then, blinking at him in surprise.

Before he could say anything, Renji cupped the back of his head with one hand and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips, so light that he could barely feel it. After a second he flushed, pulling back, but a hand on his neck stopped him.

“Don’t tease.” The murmured words sent something warm shooting through him, Renji grinning as he allowed Izuru to close the gap again. He kissed him much harder this time, giving him almost a minute before pulling back, Izuru letting him go. They stared at each other, Izuru’s tongue darting out to run over his bottom lip as if it didn’t believe what had just happened.

“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that.” Renji breathed.

“Probably almost as long as I’ve wanted to do it to you.” Izuru grinned then, tilting his head to look past Renji for a brief moment before grabbing his hand and pulling him to sit right next to him, close enough to warm each other. “Watching the moon isn’t so bad now, huh?”

Renji snorted, wrapping an arm around Izuru as he followed the blonde’s gaze to the slowing sinking moon. “I guess not.” But he was grinning, the feeling of Izuru pressed against him, the blonde's head resting a little on his shoulder, too good to begrudge him an odd whim now. He’d worry about how comfortable and easy this all seemed in the morning. Or, he thought as Izuru caught his eye again with an almost secretive smile, maybe he wouldn’t. Sometimes, things just fell into place.
