They had chased each other out here, laughing and shouting, racing for the tree in the centre of this field; their field. Renji had reached it first, of course, Izuru and Momo finishing almost in tandem with one another.
The sun beat down on the three academy students in what was one of the hottest almost-Summer afternoons yet and they collapsed, giggling at some inane comment Renji had made.
“What do you think?” Izuru opened his eyes at Renji’s sudden question, grumbling in protest as the sun blinded him. He raised a hand to shade his eyes, tilting his head back and to the right to glance at his friend, who sat with his back to the tree trunk in the shade. Momo was busying herself picking daisies a few feet away.
“About what?” he asked in return. Renji rolled his eyes and growled softly in irritation.
“About our graduation next week. Idiot, what else would I be asking about?”
“Oh.” Izuru closed his eyes again, letting his head slip back to where it was before, feeling the warmth of the sun on his face. “That.”
He didn’t answer for a few minutes, thinking. Momo returned with her hands full of flowers and draped a daisy chain over Izuru’s head. Izuru opened one eye to give her an amused glance where she knelt beside him, blocking the sun. She grinned in return and nudged at his left arm until he lifted it and allowed her to settle at his side, leaning against him and half sitting, half laying as she began to braid more flowers together. Izuru put his arm back down around her waist and closed his eyes again.
“I think,” he said slowly, “That not much is going to change.” Renji looked at him incredulously while Momo enquired softly as to what they were talking about. “Graduation.” Izuru murmured back.
“Ah. Well, I agree.” she said, holding up another loop of flowers and frowning at them a moment; she added a twist of forget-me-nots and hung them around her own head.
“You guys’re crazy.” Renji snorted. “Kira’s gonna be in another division to us for heaven’s sake!”
“And we’ll still see each other as often as our duties permit.” Izuru said calmly, glancing again at Renji and beckoning him over. “Honestly, do you really think we’d just stop seeing each other like that?” He reached up to where Renji knelt next to him and grabbed his collar, pulling him down for a long kiss.
Momo leant back over Izuru‘s chest, dropping another chain of daisies over Renji’s head. His held a poppy twisted among the white flowers, and looking closer at Izuru’s would reveal a buttercup hiding in amongst his hair. She twisted, his loose arm still around her, to kiss Renji’s cheek as Izuru released him, smiling. Izuru pushed himself up to kiss her then, murmuring thanks for the chain of flowers against her lips.
Renji licked his lips once and returned Momo’s more chaste kiss, sitting back on his heels a moment later. They had such a casual relationship that sometimes he feared it would be so easy to break. But then he would remember the trouble they had gone through to form it and he would smile.
“I’m being an idiot again, aren’t I?” Izuru’s dismissive shake of his head and Momo’s quiet laughter gave Renji his answer and he reached up to touch the flowers in his hair with a grin.
“I think,” Momo said quietly, glancing at the two of them, “That Renji-kun wants something more definite.” Izuru sat up and Renji shifted forward so that they all sat as close together as they could.
“There isn’t anything more definite.” Izuru said sadly. “But I will give you my solemn promise that I will do what is within my power to keep us together.” Momo echoed his sentiment, both serious though they all grinned at Izuru’s deliberate slip back into formality.
Renji looked between them. Cute Momo who seemed like she would do anything for a certain someone she admired, maybe even idolised. Smart Izuru who would hold to his family’s ideals of loyalty to the last. And himself, a brash idiot who didn’t know when to keep his mouth shut.
The bright afternoon sunlight glinted off golden hair, made copper strands shine and the ebony appear darker by comparison. Three very different personalities joining together. Sometimes Renji really didn’t know what held them together.
When Izuru tugged him down to lie beside them and Momo leant over Izuru’s stomach to play with loose strands of his hair, Renji began to realise.
When he lent forward to brush a kiss against Momo’s forehead and Izuru tangled his hand in his long hair, the message became clearer.
And when he saw their hands joined together, heard them laugh at his stupid jokes, and smiled when they both took one of his hands to complete their circle, he knew.
No matter what life threw at them, no matter how different they were, none of it really mattered because they were together.
And right now, that was all that counted.
