The trip to the Grand Canyon turned out great! I was a little doubtful, considering the plans for drivers and cars didn't get worked out until five hours prior to leaving. But amazingly enough, it all fell into place.
My group left Intel at 3pm on Friday afternoon. I rode up with Leigh and Tammer, which turned out to be a pretty fun trip, for a five-hour drive. We didn't arrive at the campsite until a little after 8pm, which means we got to put up tents in the glow of headlights, as we were the first car to arrive. That took until about 10 (you'd think with a couple of engineers they would have gone up faster). Then Leigh and I went to get firewood and beer, we started the fire, and I spent the rest of the evening watching people drink and act stupid around a campfire. Always fun. Took some pretty good pictures too. :) We all got to bed late that night, and Leigh and I spent probably about another hour or so just talking in our tent. (It was the "Leigh tent." If you weren't named Leigh, you couldn't be in there.) We ended up having a good talk. It was nice to talk to someone, anyone at that point, about my week and how overwhelmed and frustrated I was. And Leigh ended up being a really good listener, asking pointed questions that I didn't want to ask myself.
The next day was spent hiking down the Canyon. It was the wrong time of year to go all the way to the river, so we just went down about a mile-and-a-half to the first rest house, then hiked back out. Turned out to be about a four-hour trip with all the stops we made. And when we got back to the campsite, I downed three Advil to kill the pain in my left knee, more than likely caused by the way I walk in my brace. At sunset we went back to the Canyon, and found a really choice place to watch it. How beautiful. And how often can you say you watched the sunset from the Grand Canyon? The rest of the night was pretty tame. Leigh, Jill, Elisabeth, Kat, and I had all collaborated on food for the trip, and we made hamburgers and hot dogs for supper. That was fun.
We left on Sunday around 9am and got home by 2pm. Then I unpacked my car, started my laundry, and fell asleep for four hours until 9pm. Then it was time for bed, so I just went back to sleep. 12 hours of continuous sleep in a bed felt so nice after sleeping on rocks for two days. And that was my weekend. Definitely memorable, and I will update my website with all the pictures soon.
This week looks to be pretty standard. There is an intern teambuilding activity on Wednesday which should be fun, and I am throwing a house party on Friday since my parents are out of town. The weekend will definitely be hopping! Cheers!
