Groovy Green blogged about Top-Bar Beehives today. They are compact hives that are generally managed organically. They've been used in non-industrialized places for a while, but are apparently now gaining popularity in the US. Here's
what they look like. The links on the GG blog have a lot more info. Climate is an issue with the smaller hives. They don't do well in harsh winters.
BackYardHive.com has some info about insulating hives, but I haven't read yet how far north that's effective.
