So the other day Jill and I were watching Season 3 of West Wing and we came across an episode where Toby and Lord Marbury (British Ambassador) snuck off from a White House party to have a drink and they both wanted some Lagavulin Scotch. It's a distillery just down the road from the Laphroaig distillery (good peaty scotch) on the Isle of Islay where my beloved peaty Bowmore comes from.
I've been kind of excited about this for a couple of weeks now and tonight I was in a bar that happened to stock the 16 year old Lagavulin that they spoke so warmly of in the West Wing episode. As part of my ongoing quest to try 27 scotches before I turn 27 years old, I bought myself a shot of it. Sadly, it was nothing special. Aaron Sorkin led me astray. It wasn't even peaty. It had the smoothness that one expects from a 16 year scotch, but none of the fun that one associates with that region. So, my list is up to 2.
1. Oban
2. Lagavulin
Also, if you haven't heard about it from me yet, Jill made a delightful music video for the Decemberists' "The Mariner's Revenge Song." It has dancing stuffed animals and many amusing images:
