People hate managers as a class of people because of the work they have to do sometimes - evaluation (which can feel like criticism) and even layoffs. These things are not fun but I've also seen their redemptive side. If someone is not in a position they belong, you're actually doing them a favor in pointing that out through both of these means.
Nobody likes to be released from their job (least of all me) but it happens in the course of business that it is actually the most important thing to do. All the feelings of betrayal, futility and worthlessness are natural, but inaccurate.
In business, you are owed a 2 week notice. My wife and I learned that bluntly right after we were married in 1982. But a few years later my "career" was doing a mercurial explosion, wherein my salary would be almost an order or magnitude (that is, 10 times greater) of what it had been 20 years later.
So I don't buy the "common wisdom" about "evil" management; I haven't for years. Even during tough times, there's redemptive work being done through the changes we go through. It certainly has been the case in my life.
