Rating: G
Disclaimer: Does it look like I own them?
Summary: Yabu teaches JUMP how to measure the most important year of their lives.
1. Moments So Dear
Yabu Kota remembers everything about that day.
He can still feel the sun’s warmth against his skin. He can still hear Shoon’s laughter, the two of them careening down the hallways as Ryo-kun tore after them, his hair still blue and his eyes still red with anger. He can still see Taiyo’s smile as the self-proclaimed ‘sexy Osaka man’ was lead away, his ear held tightly by an ever-grinning Koya-sempai. He can still remember thinking how wonderful a day it was.
But most of all, he can still remember the moment it all changed.

“Yabu-kun? Hikaru-kun?” Julie called, skidding to a halt in front of them. “Thank goodness I caught you in time!”
“What is it, Julie-san?” Hikaru asked, coming to a halt beside him. “Is something wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong, boys,” Julie replied, grinning. “But I’m sorry, I need to ask you two to stay a little longer. Johnny-san wants to speak to you.”
Yabu and Hikaru glanced at each other, then at Julie. “Eh?”
“It’s nothing bad,” Julie said quickly. “Believe me, it’s nothing bad. But I just need you guys for twenty minutes longer. Is that okay?”
He turned to Taiyo and Shoon. “Guys-”
“Don’t worry, Ko-chan,” Taiyo said, grinning. “Shoon and I’ll save you seats, we promise.”
Hikaru smiled. “You’re awesome, Taiyo.”
“But you promise to come as quick as you can, right?” Shoon asked hopefully. “We never get to hang out anymore, just Ya-ya-yah. And you know how long we’ve been wanting to see this movie!”
“I know, Shoon,” Yabu replied. “It won’t take that long. Besides, Ya-ya-yah’s always going to be a priority. This’ll just take a bit.”
“Promise?”
“Promise,” Yabu grinned, linking pinky fingers with Shoon. “Besides, it can’t be a big thing if it’s only going to take twenty minutes. Maybe it’s something about the new CD debut or maybe it’s just another fan girl scare. It’s probably not that big.”
“Yeah,” Shoon replied. “It probably isn’t.”
Hikaru nodded. “We’ll be there in twenty, guys. Promise.”
Shoon smiled and waved as he and Taiyo walked off. “Bye, Hika! Bye, Ko-chan!”
He grinned and waved back, turning to Hikaru. “Come on, let’s make it quick. We don’t want to disappoint Shoon and Taiyo, ne?”
“Yeah,” Hikaru replied. “Ya-ya-yah’s more important. Johnny-san knows that. Race you?”
He laughed and took off after his best friend. Yeah…Ya-ya-yah’s more important. Johnny knows that…doesn’t he?

Twenty minutes later, he looked back on that moment and realized a very important fact. Johnny doesn’t know anything at all.

A/N : Wow.
Thus begins my new series, ‘How to Measure a Life’. For those interested in the musical world, they may realize a connection between the series title, the chapter titles, the story and one of the most AMAZAZING musicals ever to hit Broadway.
Any guesses?
No?
Oh well, *wink*, you’ll get it eventually.
This story was originally an idea I had while skimming the HSJ-thon. Over the course of about twenty minutes while talking to Kiyumi-chan, the entire idea changed. And then, when I was trying to think of a title, the entire focus changed yet again. And as of right now, I really love this.
Special thanks to Kiyu-chan. She helped me with the title, the summary and had some awesome ideas about the general course of the story and for that, I’m always grateful. Love you kid!
Finally, I seriously hope you guys enjoy this one. The idea’s very close to my heart right now, as I’m dealing with some issues that resonate strongly with the song this story is based on and right now, writing is the only thing that’s keeping me sane. So I’m going to put all my heart into this one and into the next couple weeks of my life.
As always, comments are awesome and I love hearing from you guys. Tell me what you think!
