More SPN musings

Spoilers for a whole lot of stuff, but mostly "Simon Says", so if you haven't watched, well...

Dean's instincts are really, really fascinating me here, lately. But last night, with his repeated insistence that Andy wasn't evil, I can't help but wonder if Dean doesn't have some sort of ability of his own. A lot of people in different places have pointed to Dean's uncanny ability to be where he needs to be in just the nick of time--the Pilot is coming screaming to mind right here, when he Just Knows to go back and get Sam for no apparent reason--and the way he seems to know whether people are evil or not. (I'm not going to touch Bloodlust here because Dean's interaction with Gordon was mourning more than anything else, and Gordon wasn't strictly Evil, just a titch obsessed.) I'm really, solidly beginning to wonder if Dean has some sort of empathic ability, perhaps dormant, that allows him to lock in with people. Of course, it makes the most sense that he would lock in with Sam the most strongly, since he and Sam can have whole freakin' conversations with just a look and a nod or two, but the way he locked in with Andy last night and knew that kid wasn't evil, it suggested to me that while Dean might not be one of the Demon's Shiny Kids, he's got something going on other than just good instincts. And in a way, it would be a relief, because if Dean has his own shine going on, his own ability, it strongly says that the Winchester blood has some sort of property to it that makes the Demon interested in them, and it says that Sam's conception and birth happened at a special, specific time, which makes him Shinier than Dean. But that they are still related, still brothers. I want them both to have something going on, that connection of blood and being set apart, as Winchesters and as hunters. And I think, I hope, Kripke might be setting us up for that. Dean has some kind of mojo going on, his instincts are too good, too honed, too uncanny. He has to be special in his own way, just not as powerful as Sammy.
