Last Train Home
The rackety clang of the train on the tracks jostled Katie out of her nap. It had been an uncomfortable sleep against the window of the carriage.
"I got you some coffee." Matt said offering her a Styrofoam cup towards hers.
"They have coffee?"
"They have an ancient looking drinks cart." Matt said. "Complete with a sweet, old, lady who kept giving me cookies." He held out his palm which held a half dozen duel packets of chocolate chip cookies.
"Good," Katie snatched a packet. "Food is good, even bad train food."
"Not that bad a train," Matt pointed out. "Least it doesn't stink like a coffin."
Katie shuddered at the memory of the train they'd had to catch on their trip to Boston. Matt was still anxious when it came to flying so they had rescheduled their trip to Las Vegas until Christmas . Katie didn't mind trains at all; but they had unfortunately frequented a series of dodgy trains in Boston.
But it had been a relaxing trip for them, all they'd done was sleep in, go to a day spa pretending to be a newlywed couple to get a discount, and wander around the city. For Katie, it was nice to have a break from baby formula, diapers and spending all night and day in her pyjamas. For Matt, it was nice just be somewhere that was on a map.
"It's good to be going home." Matt said as he stared out the window at the cityscape they passed. "Hell, it's good to be able to use that phrase and actually mean it."
"Well, it's good to have you home." Katie hugged Matt's arm and rested her head against his shoulder. "Some people missed you. Not me, of course."
"Of course."
"But some people." Katie smiled into his arm as their train pulled to a stop at the final station.
