She Remembers
Callie was enraged, and her son was wailing loudly in her arms.

Elliot felt helpless. “Callie! You need to calm down, okay? Listen to your baby! Listen to him! He needs you to be calm, you know that. You brought him here, to a police station because you want him to be safe, you are being a good mother; don’t stop now, please.” She sobbed into her baby’s towel of a blanket. “I give you my word that no one will take that baby away from you, do you hear me? Callie?” She stopped hyperventilating and sank back against the wall. “Callie?”

“I’m sorry.” She whispered as she dropped down to her haunches and then sat cross-legged as she had been before, only now there was a sticky, orange soda stain nearby. “I’m so tired.”

“It’s okay. You don’t have to apologize. I should. I’m sorry I said you should meet my friend. It’s not my choice to make for you or for your son. I want you to be able to decide what you want to do, okay?” He offered gently. “You decided to bring him to a safe place, you decided to listen to me because you know I’ll keep you and your baby protected, and you decided to stay because you know we can help find out what happened to you.”

Callie didn’t say anything.

“So, if you decide you want to talk to my friend? Then you can, alright? And if you don’t want to, you don’t have to.” He shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly; like it wasn’t a big deal. “Okay?”

Callie lifted her eyes to meet Elliot’s for only a brief moment. “Okay.”

CSU Tech Burt Trevor was just outside the interview room with Captain Cragen over his shoulder going over the information Elliot had retrieved from his victim. They were narrowing down their search.

“Alright, it’s 2006 now, she’s been missing since 05 so she must have graduated in Australia in 04, or possibly 05. NYU takes in 30 international students a semester, they publish the graduating students online...” he clucked his tongue a few times as he scrolled down a list of names. “Here it is. Caleb Alisen Cross, completed a first semester in early 2003 then went back home.”

“Well; obviously she came back.”

Burt clicked a few links on the page bringing up information on Callie’s travel history. “She obtained a work visa in 2002.”

“That would have expired in 05, though, right? Why didn’t immigration send out a warrant to find her?”

“Um...” Burt hummed as he searched for the answer. “They did. It’s flagged as redacted..." He shared a grave look with his boss. "They think she went back to Australia.”

“Callie...” Elliot ventured after he’d let her sit silently for a few more moments. “I need you to tell me about the room you talked about.”

She answered right away. “It was dark. I couldn’t see anything.”

“But you got out.” He tried to prompt her. “You escaped.”

“I don’t know how.” She smiled sadly. “Do you have any idea how frustrating that is? One second I’m in a dark room and the next I’m in a police station holding my baby...?”

“Do you remember giving birth?”

She looked frustrated. “Yeah, I think so...” She laughed at how strange that sounded. Then her smile vanished; her eyes grew dark. “I screamed so much... the pain was... unbearable.” Her face contorted in horror the more the memories flooded back, as if she was hearing them and experiencing them for the first time. “I screamed for help... for anyone... no one came. No one heard me.” She sighed and yawned simultaneously. “And then... he was there. He wasn’t crying. I’d been using the towel as a blanket; I wrapped it around him and he started to cry.” Her lucidity didn’t seem to last; and once again she looked vaguely off into the distance. “I don’t remember.” She mumbled. “It’s all gone.”
