*warning - kate rant*
I don't want to incite a debate here but I've been thinking about how annoyed these following things make me and need to vent . Ok; so let me preface this by saying I really like Kate as a character and I think we need more like her on television. Aside from the Jack/Sawyer flipping she's a really strong and interesting character to watch.
Having said that, season 4 and 5 Kate has really pissed me off...
I'm a massive Claire fan so the fact that Aaron was not with her really annoyed me in the first place. But I got over that thinking it would be really interesting to see how it plays out. Therein lies my disdain. Why would Kate, a woman who has run from responsibility her entire life and on-island showed rare interest in the baby even confessing to Claire that she's not good with children, decide that she wanted to take Aaron? It makes no sense. Surely had Kate taking him been the only option left; it would be more logical. I would have much preferred seeing Kate grow into the motherly role rather than just take a baby.
Secondly; the selfishness of Kate keeping Aaron when she knew about Carole really ticked me off. That little boy not only doesn't know his real mother; but his grandmother has no idea he exists. And on top of that, Kate dumps him off to Carole having no idea what kind of person she is and leaves this little boy with no one. Also, saying to Carole that Claire disappeared and they 'looked everywhere for her'. Kate; you didn't do shit. Sawyer and Miles looked all night, you did nothing. And claiming that Claire left him behind when you have no idea what happened to her is really painting Claire as a horrible mother when she wasn't. No one, especially not Kate, knows what happened to her so how dare she speculate and say awful things about her?
Thirdly; how dare Kate repeatedly say "She was going to give him up for adoption", as if justifying why she had to take Aaron? Claire didn't want to give Aaron away anymore. AND saying that to Claire's mother! That was Claire's whole character's storyline from season 1 into season 2. She did want Aaron. Just look at the end of Maternity Leave where Claire explains to Aaron that she was going to give him away but now she knows they're meant to be together and are supposed to take care of each other. And when she delivers Aaron, Kate asks her flat out if she wants this baby and Claire nods. Aside from that; when did we ever see Claire without Aaron? And, in season 4 Eggtown, Claire tells Kate that being a mum was the last thing she thought she'd be good at; Kate can see how wonderful a mother Claire is. Any idiot can see how much Claire loves her son; so how dare Kate imply otherwise. And that actually leads my nicely into my next point.
If Kate did believe, as she so often said, that Claire was going to give Aaron away, then why did she go back to the island? She says to Carole in Whatever Happened, Happened that she was going back to find Claire. But then in the finale, she has this convo with Jack:
KATE - I came back so he could be where he belongs--with his mother.
JACK - If this works, Claire will never come to the island and they'll always be together. Just they way they were meant to be.
KATE - She was gonna give him up for adoption, Jack.
Um...WHAT? So she came back to the Island so Claire and Aaron could be together; even though she knows Claire was going to give him away...so they wouldn't be together, Kate. It's like an oxymoron; she can't think both things. It doesn't make sense.
Finally, I was actually happy at the end of Whatever Happened, Happened with Kate proclaiming to Carole that she was going back to find Claire. But did she do anything once she got there? Nope. She tells Sawyer she doesn't know why everyone else came back; only why she did. But did she ever go searching? Did she ask Miles or Sawyer what happened the day Claire disppeared? Did she do anything to even attempt finding her? Nope. She was uncomfortable around Sawyer and Juliet and still bitchy with Jack; which became classic Kate this season.
I really am curious to see how the final season plays out and if anything mentioned above is ever adressed again. I know Claire is coming back and I'm thrilled, but if she doesn't end up with Aaron then her whole character is wasted. Claire's character arc is tied to Aaron. She didn't want to have a baby, her boyfriend convinced her to then dumped her. She was going to give him away, but couldn't and then realized how much she wanted him and how much she loved him. She became a mother on the island and to just toss that aside and hand Aaron over to Kate, a murderer who flicks from guy to guy, cheapens Claire's character and really sours my opinion of the show.
