Jesus was definately surrounded by friends. There were twelve men that he was especially close to and several women as well. He catches a lot of flack, actually, for hanging out with "Prostitutes, tax collectors, and sinners" and there are actually quite a few passages where Jesus is at a party. In fact, his first miricle was the party trick of turning water into wine (John 2:6-2:11).
As for drunkenness or drugs being sinful, they CAN be in 2 ways. First, if they damage the body. Second, whatever you do while under the influencs is as much your responsability as if you were sober. Probably Jesus did get tipsy. There is actually a Jewish holiday (Purim) where it is required by law, though I am not sure when that requirement came to be.
As to his sorrowful look in paintings, the first time that the bible ever refers to him as being "sorrowful" or sad or anything like that is the night before his crucifiction (Matthew 26:37), which is understandable. The closest that he gets to sorrow elsewhere is bemoaning the fate that Israel was to suffer at some point in the future. The jokes that were told, however, or the nights of gazing at the stars with his friends, or just hanging out go unrecorded. What people found important were his teachings. The gospels end with the statement "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that the whole world would not have enough room for the books that could be written", so they chose the parts that were relevant to life to record.
The painting that you described could be of the scene in John 21, by the way. This has a bonfire with fish roasting, and them sitting around and chatting. I don't know if this has ever been painted.

he probably did party, he is only human. what you have to understand about the bible, valerie, is that its meant to be read as a guide to life, how to live your life morally. The key point being that life is not always fun. In fact, life can be straight up shitty sometimes. And think about how boring the bible would be if everyone were just drunk all the time...it'd be like "and then jesus passed out for 3 days" and nothing would get accomplished. So while they probably DID party, what's important is what jesus actually did that was worthwhile.

chris-

thanks for the clarification and the biblical support discussion. very apt and applicable :)

gina-

i was bitching about religious paintings, not the bible. i know the bible is a guide for how to live a moral life. i'm just sick of seeing jesus' pasty, depressed face plastered across the front of every single bus in merida. but thanks for clearing that up for me, just in case i had missed the memo the rest of the world had received ;)
