I cut out a little early from the conference in Boston last Thursday to go to the Boston Public Library, one of my favorite places ever... and discovered the McKim building. Granted, I haven't been to the main library too often so it wasn't entirely surprising that I hadn't seen everything, but I felt as if I'd opened the back of the wardrobe and found myself in snowy glade. The Rare Books room! The Fine Arts room! The exhibit of miniature books! The formal gardens and fountain! The tiny ballroom, tucked away amongst the Classical architecture, with Arthurian scenes painted all around! (The Song started playing in my head automatically.) Wow, just wow. I'm trying to calculate my vacation days so I can spend more time there this fall.
Of course, as other A&S junkies will attest, it's impossible to just look and say, "Ooh, pretty!" It has to be "Ooh, pretty, I need to make one of those!" So, yeah, miniature books. And abecedariums.
Someday I swear I will discover the elusive 42-hour Sleep Day that we used to dream about in college, and I will have enough time for everything.
