Dress diary

So, technically the dress is only part of the outfit. The other parts of it are the cloak and the headgear.

The headgear will be a padded roll, with a criss-cross wrapped trim on it, and a veil draped over that. Like this:

(Margrethe I of Denmark)

Not quite sure what the shape of the veil is (and this isn't the only source I'm working from, just the easiest one at hand). But those bits should basically be pretty easy.

The cloak is of a distinctive style. My unresearched guess is that women wore these indoors most often, where it was drafty but not as cold as outside. I never see them closed (though of course that could also be the artist's rendition). I do frequently see them bundled up in women's arms, which obscures the view of the garb underneath (curses!). I'll try to post a picture later, I can't seem to get one that will upload.

But the point is that they drape like a lightweight garment, and they are sometimes depicted as having a fur lining (likely of small rodentia). So, when out fabric shopping with lady_cassia (so much fun!), I got a lightweight, deep green wool and some fake fur. I didn't think I wanted fake fur, thinking of all the plastic-y gunk I've felt along the way. But this stuff... it's not the very softest stuff they had, that was the wrong color. But this is a close second, and quite lovely.

I'm going to enjoy wearing it. I'm just trying not to think of the annoyance of actually working with the stuff. It will be great when it's finished, but I predict some swearing going on before then.

More work on it tomorrow.
