A Story

Jan 20, 2008 23:55

In 1957, when my dad was an infant, my grandma and granddaddy were having marital problems. My granddaddy was always at the racetrack, drinking a lot, not home very much. He was not ready to grow up and be a responsible husband and father. My grandma never fought, never raised her voice. It was the 50s and that's how wives responded. She walked out on him and returned to her mother's house with my dad. Six weeks later, my granddaddy showed up at their doorstep and said "That boy needs a father." My grandma moved back in with him. Five years later, they had my aunt Wendy, and they bought some land and built a house in the country.

My grandma and granddaddy have since passed away. That story may be familial folk legend; I've heard it about half a dozen times in my life. The last time I heard it was when my dad told it during my granddaddy's eulogy. It's always had a profound effect on me, especially when I heard it last time and especially now.
