So, there was this thought that just snuck up on me.

And it was about the chemistry of Tony and Ziva and how they are perceived by others over the past three years. And I suddenly realized they have themes.

Season seven was all about uncertainty. About not knowing what to do with the other, about not being sure what leads where and if there’s something going on or maybe not. The first half of the season was them trying to get back on track, trying to get back to normal. Second half (from "Ignition" on) was laced with even more uncertainty, culminating in the whole Paris thing and the talk about it between McGee and Abby in Mexico. Even the people around them wondered if there is something going on or not.

Season eight, now, took off with the same uncertainty ("You were putting on a show, right?") but quickly turns into a season where everyone around them assumes they have a relationship - starting with McGee’s face even while he asks for confirmation that it was all just a fake (look at when the camera starts to pan to Tony, you can see Timmy starting to get it), continuing to Tony’s dad assuming there’s something going on with Junior and Ziva, right down to that other female agent who wants to make a pass at Tony but assumes Ziva has claimed dibs. (Dang, I wish I could remember the episode.) And yeah, then there’s Rachel, too, and that bar owner and the conversation about "knowing a bickering couple when he sees one"...

So basically, we suddenly have everyone around them simply assuming there is something going on - not necessarily on a physical level, but definitely on an emotional one. And I think that’s one reason why Gibbs was so pissed off by EJ swooping in and just having mindless fun with Tony and distracting the boy from what seems like a done deal. And it’s one reason why Timmy was so shocked when he learned that Tony’s banging EJ. They just assumed otherwise.

And now we have the first half of season nine behind us and it seems like this year the universe and the people around them start pushing. "Oh, just get it on already!" We have Rachel coming back and telling Tony "I haven’t forgotten about that, we’ll get back on that!" and we have all these things happening to show how a relationship with others can turn bad and how family is the most important thing to get you through the day. And there’s the plane crash that forces even Tony to realize that life is short and he better put it to good use. And Senior, of course, going for the blunt route and telling Tony to sweep Ziva off her feet. AND WE HAVE GIBBS NOT OBJECTING TO THAT NOTION OR EVEN ROLLING HIS EYES.

There *is* a clear theme in all of this, I just never realized before that it is so obvious. Right now I don’t think we will have to wait until the last season to see these two together.
