So, this is a kinda weird thought that hit me today, just before work was over... Maybe one of the reasons NCIS fandom feels different from other fandoms I was involved in before is that I feel there is a real lack of "derivative" fan art floating around here.
Yes, there are stories, gazillions of them. Yes, there are vids (some quite astonishing ones, and I love them dearly). Yes, there are LJ icons and banners and pic spams and wallpapers (also some of them quite lovely). But even while typing the wallpaper part I start to hesitate, because most of them are, well, touched up a bit here and there, textured a bit, but in most cases these are not making some totally new context out of the given one. And that's a thing I have seen and am still seeing in lots of other fandoms.
Like, AU images, with our team in fantasy outfits. Crossover manips with, say, Stargate, for instance. Smoochy image manipulations of your favorite pairings to illustrate stories or just because you want something pretty to look at. Filk. Heck, I'd even take a pic of Tony as a centaur for a start. ;)
Is this a thing that is more heavily done in slash fandom and I just never noticed it before because X-Files was my last het interest and I wasn't involved in fandom there? Or is it because the NCIS fan base does have a lower age average than other (and/or slash) fandoms and it's only us old hags that are into this flavor of creativity? I'm curious.
Feel free to correct my fannish impression, though. I'm always open to links and recommendations - preferrably Tony/Ziva-centric, though gen centering on either of those or both is perfectly fine with me, too. Else I'll have to start doing this sort of thing all on my own. *pouts*
