FIC, PG, GENFIC: HARRY POTTER, THE MALFOY FAMILY

Excerpt From Fic: “Do you remember what I said to you about some people hurting the children they’re suppose to care for, Draco?”
The boy stopped frowning, and slowly nodded. It was a start. Feeling heartened by such an auspicious beginning, Lucius continued in a soft voice. “This is the little boy I was telling you about that night. His name is Harry. Remember when we were reading about how his family died and how he destroyed the evil wizard who had been hurting innocent people?”
Again, his son nodded. Lucius saw that he now had his son’s complete attention. He also noticed out of the corner of his eye that Harry was listening carefully. “This is Harry Potter. The people that were suppose to be taking good care of him and making sure he grew up safe and happy, like you, didn’t do their job. They hurt him, so I brought him here to live with us.”
Draco thought about this for a long moment. Lucius felt the tension returning to the room, but he did his best to ignore it. Finally, the boy smiled. He stepped up to his mother and held up a hand to Harry. “Hi,” he said. “I’m Draco. It’s good to meet you.”
Harry slid down from Narcissa’s arms and tentatively put out one small hand. The boys shook hands, causing the adults to smile with relief. It was an endearing sight. “Hi,” Harry murmured softly. “It’s good to meet you too.”
What I thought: This is such an adorable fic. I almost never read genfic, but I do have a love of reading about baby Harry or, in this case, 5 year old Harry. The premise is based on the assumption that Lucius may have started working with Voldemort on his own, but soon realized that it was not something he wished to do. However, shortly thereafter he was placed under the Imperius curse, as was his excuse in the books. Harry is shown to be a sweet and innocent young child, but with an intelligence far beyond his years. He’s a survivor, but has not been left unaffected by his past.
This fic is well worth the read, but you will have to put up with a lack of proper formatting. I’m not sure if it was the author or the way the website uploaded the fic, but there is an extreme lack of spacing between paragraphs that caused me to constantly lose my place. It’s still pretty easy to tell who is speaking, but it’s a little hard to look at one huge block of text. As well, the quotation marks are utterly useless. Half the time a quote will be opened but not closed, or it will close well after the speaker has finished and into the narration itself. Thankfully, the writing was more than enough to make up for these irritations.
