Like Hell
It hurts doesn’t it?
He glanced to the side, unsurprised to see Lilly standing next to him. These random times when she would appear no longer startled him as they had first done. He simply looked at her, still holding Meg’s hand and feeling a little confused as to what she was referring to.
It hurts doesn’t it? She repeated when he didn’t say anything. Seeing them together. She nodded towards them and he forced himself to look at Logan and Veronica. They were still standing in the doorway. He knew that Lilly was looking for him to agree with him. Not that he could actually say anything when she was dead and everyone else would assume he was talking to the air.
Lilly laughed bitterly. Who would have thought a year ago, two years ago, that it would be Veronica and Logan who would wind up together.
He looked at her again, honestly surprised by the bitterness he heard in her voice. He was happier though to be watching her. It meant that he didn’t have to look at those two. Because Lilly was right. It did hurt.
Lilly didn’t stop talking and she didn’t move her eyes from where Logan and Veronica stood together. You wouldn’t think that I would find this painful. Not after everything I put Logan through. All the times I cheated on him. But for him to fall in love with my best friend…
His eyes widened. In love? His mind shrieked. His grip on Meg’s hand tightened.
For the first time she turned away from them and looked at him. He doesn’t realize it yet Duncan. But it’s there, I know it is. Though I wouldn’t worry too much yet. Veronica’s not even close to love yet. She’s only barely hit like and lust. Lilly glanced at Meg’s hand held tight in his own. Not that you should even care what she feels since you’ve so obviously moved on.
First she was talking about how much it hurt and then she says something like that? He wished Lilly would just disappear and stop talking. It would be easier to deal with this. It was making things even harder to hear her talking like… like this! “Shut up,” he growled lowly through clenched teeth. He didn’t want to hear another word about how Veronica and Logan felt.
She was watching him with pity in her eyes. Pity for him and pity for herself as well. He squeezed his eyes shut. He didn’t need pity. He had Meg. It shouldn’t matter that the love of his life was now with his best friend.
When he opened his eyes Lilly was gone. But her voice continued to echo in his head. It hurts doesn’t it?
Damn right, it hurt. It hurt like hell.
