The concert @ Skirball was fun. Erica and I got there too early, so we left, bought a glass flask worth of bacardi, mixed it with some coke in a kimmel bathroom and had a few pretty potent concert drinks. The opening musician was drunk, untalented at her instrument of choice, endearing as all hell and eating from a bunch of grapes atop her piano. She had a great, surprisingly strong voice, but should recruit a band. She reminded Erica and I of the singer of the Dresden Dolls, mainly because she would convulse like some sort of possessed doll when she finished songs, so we would know. I think I want to sleep with her.

The Wrens were fucking awesome. I can't believe that a group of 40somethings playing 3-4 year old recordings were so great, even though there were major sound problems with the vocals. They were great musicians and performers, and the lead singer tossed his guitar seriously 10 feet into the air and caught it again, playing. We watched a little of the Walkmen set, heard a couple good songs and a couple discardable ones, and bailed. On the way out we wanted to invite the Wrens to play in our dorm room as they mentioned during their set (and seriously we would have more than enough space in our living room), and one of the guitarists was flattered that we'd shown up for them and asked us what size tshirts we wore, handed them to us, and wished us a good night. He was sweet. So, I emailed them asking them to play Lafayette 1509. And now I'm wearing a free Wrens T-shirt featuring the state of New Jersey.
