It was a little unsettling how the first anniversary of Angelo's death came and went and it didn't bother her. Well, correction -- it did, but not to the point where she was inconsolable. She'd had visions of not being able to get out of bed, of not feeling anything. After all, she'd been numb for so long after his death, wouldn't it make sense?
Instead, she was fine. Completely fine. And that made her feel guilty.
There was no point in telling Paige, or anyone in the Mansion. They wouldn't understand at all. Besides, it wasn't like she knew how to explain it. The fact that she still thought Angelo should be here, not her. He had family, faith, a purpose and what did she have? Nothing. Just a knocked up teenager who couldn't do anything right.
So she smiled, and laughed and giggled as the Mansion prepared for Christmas. With so many kids with nowhere to go, the faculty really went all out. There were decorations all over, and she found it amusing how everyone used their powers to help out. Kids that could fly were stringing up lights, while telekinetics were helping to decorate the trees. Lessons were to be learned at every opportunity, Scott would always remind them, and she even helped out by keeping the younger kids occupied with a little light show.
As for the older people, they were all going to attend the ball. She'd let everyone think she was going but at the last second, told them all she was sick and not feeling well. Of course, everyone was immediately concerned but she shrugged them off, saying that maybe finally, she was getting morning sickness and that it wouldn't be a problem. After having seen them off however, she went upstairs to her room and started to look through her closet for something to wear.
She was debating between pants and a dress when she heard her door open and Alex come in.
"What's this your sick?"
It took her a moment to figure out what he was talking about and when she did, she gave a little smile. "Oh. No, I'm fine, I just didn't want to go tonight and I think everyone would've made me unless I said something else, why? Also, why aren't you out with them? You look nice..." And he did look nice, if you could get past the frown on his face.
He stepped into her room, and sat down on the bed. And just sighed. "You said you were sick."
"So?" Her attention was back on her clothes already, still debating. Finally with a sigh, she grabbed the dress. Pants were starting to get a bit snug. She didn't notice the expression on his face. They hadn't really spoken much since their fight a week or so ago. She still didn't see what the problem was with Ms. Frost being involved and he still didn't get why she didn't see what the problem was.
Turning her attention back to the bed, her neutral face gave way to a tired smile. She'd missed him. Tossing the dress onto the bed, she crawled up next to him and, throwing her arms around his neck, she gave him a light kiss. "I'm sorry. Don't be worried. I'm fine. Baby's fine. We're good. I just...wanted to go somewhere else tonight and didn't feel like explaining. Are you mad at me?"
An arm slithered up around her waist, and he shook his head. "No, just curious what was going on and it's not like I could ask you then...but you planning on filling me in?" She thought for a moment and then nodded.
"Wanna go to midnight mass?"
It obviously wasn't what he expected, but he nodded and she finished getting dressed. He didn't really ask her why, and she was glad because there was no way she could answer. Instead, making sure to pick a church that Kurt wasn't going to, they sat through the proceedings together, her hand firmly grasped in his and she tried her best not to cry. The only times she'd ever attended church was with Ange and his grandmother, and she'd never understood how he could trust in something so blindly. He always told her that was the beauty of faith. She missed their conversations. She missed him.
Eventually, she gave in and let the tears roll down her face, not even bothering to wipe them off. She needed to feel the emotions, knowing for sure that this time, it wasn't the hormones -- she was genuinely sad. Again, Alex didn't say anything, just handed her tissues, and squeezed her hand a little harder. Jubilee had had every intention on going to church on her own, lighting candles for Ange and her parents, but having him there had made things easier. And she had no idea how to tell him that.
It wasn't until they were back at the Mansion, curled up in his bed that she finally found the way to say it.
"We're a family now..." She could tell the words had taken him back a little, and she almost regretted saying it until she heard his answer back.
"Yeah."
One word could mean the world, and right then and there, that was all she needed to hear. And for once, she could stay the entire night in his bed, seeing as everyone else was at the Ball, having gotten hotel rooms.
All in all, the night couldn't have gone any better, and for that she was thankful.
