You don’t quite hear him at first. You’re sitting up in bed, and he’s pacing in front of you, mumbling to himself. He just told you Sloan was pregnant.
Then you realize he has stopped and is looking at you.
“Lexie?” You hear him say your name with a roughness that is not familiar to you.
He leans sideways on the bed and takes your hands in his, and you stare at those hands. Entwined hands, and you notice the subtle differences in his and yours. Yours are obviously female due to your small bone structure, the longer length to your nails, and softness to your palms. They look so much younger than his. His are calloused and worn. Those hands have been through more than you’ve been alive for.
You pull his hand out of yours and turn his palm up barely registering the hint of confusion when he says your name again.
You hear yourself tell him to let you see. You sense his growing frustration with your calmness and sudden fascination with hands, but you rub his wrist slightly with your thumb to reassure him you’re okay.
You trace the lines on the palm of his hand and realize you are just a fraction of his life. He has been living and experiencing long before you were born. But you’re okay with that.
You hear him ask you to say something, his voice laced with uncertainty. And you want to say something, but all you can think of is how much you love this man despite all the years he has messed up.
Yes, the thought of him becoming a grandfather right now scares you to the core, and you tell him that and he nods his head because it scares him too.
But this is just a hiccup. A hiccup you can deal with.
She picks that moment to poke her head into your room, and sees you holding hands and then looks towards him, then you. She waits for your disapproval, your words which will sting but she’ll be ready with a witty retort.
However, when you don’t make a snide comment, and your eyes soften towards her, you see the tension leave her shoulders, and a sigh escape her thin frame. You offer up a small smile, all that can be mustered at the moment.
This is Mark’s daughter, and yes, you feel awkward about the closeness of your ages, but being alone is not what Sloan should be right now.
He looks back and forth between you and her. No one speaks. You don’t trust your voice at the moment. His grip tightens on your hand, and you know he’s worried. He has so many questions. What will we do now? Will we make it through this? How can he be a grandfather when he just found out he was to be a dad? All questions you don’t have answers for. But what you can answer? You love Mark Sloan, and while the baggage he carries is incredibly hard to bear, you know you will do it. Nothing will be perfect by any means, and there will be many fights, but you can manage and if you can, so can he.
