There needs to be a better word...today, my mom had to put her dog to sleep. But he's not asleep, it's just a silly turn of phrase. Why isn't there a better word, a word that encompasses having to look your companion in the eye for the last time. No more pets, and barks, and greetings at the door. An emptiness. I know her house will be lonelier in his absence.

I'm sorry for our differences, that somehow, I didn't grow up to be the daughter she needs.
