I was chatting briefly with a friend about beekeeping today, and realized that in a lot of ways, preparing for bees is somewhat similar to what I imagine preparing for a new baby feels like. Since moving into our house I've spent a lot of time focusing on garden issues, figuring out what spots get the best light, reading up on plants that are bee friendly etc., I've finally picked my spot for my hives, and already have several varieties of lavender growing in the yard as well as some crocuses planted for spring. This past weekend, J and I even picked up a dwarf plumb tree that we'll put down before the frost all in anticipation of my bees this spring.
I think I've decided on getting a top bar hive instead of the standard box (Langstroth) hive. At this point I'm not planning on getting any serious honey production going, and really am just more interested in the overall keeping of the bees. Top bar hives seem to be a bit easier to work with and doesn't require any special equipment to maintain. Plus gathering the honey from the hive is super easy. (har, unintentional bee joke).
