Summary: Third time's the charm
Stephen’s intentions in the beginning could not have been termed honorable. Back then Helen was beautiful, her marriage with Nick was failing, and Stephen did not say no. She’d smelled like soap and dirt at the same time.
Then when she was back and wild and dangerous, he thought maybe she just needed him to reel her in and set her on the path standing upright.
Twice struck out, third time’s the charm.
So, he closes the door before Nick can get back up. Nick’s face in the window is terrified but Stephen knows this time it’s the right thing.
