As he leaned against Connor’s shoulder, heat making the room feel like a coffin, Nick strangely began to feel at ease. He could still sense Connor breathing under his cheek, hear the faint crackle of fire yet his grasp was lessening.
The pain in his chest seemed to fade, any words he wanted to say to Claudia, to Connor, to any of them left his mind. Suddenly it no longer mattered that this was the end.
The fight was over, the battle lost, and it didn’t matter now because finally he could rest. He could just let it all fade.
