Nick's on the ground before he even hears the shot. For a moment he can’t see anything. Then the warm red glow of the fire and the smell of burning hit his senses. He struggles to move himself into a sitting position against the wall. Every motion is a stabbing pain in his chest.
Of all the ways he could die, the dinosaurs and strange creatures through anomalies, in the end it turns out to be Helen. There's a grim irony to it.
“Cutter!” Connor's voice calls.
Nick turns his head slightly and thinks, 'At least I won't be alone.'

They were all staring at Nick like he was insane, had two heads, like he needed to be carted off to the funny farm. His breaths tried to allow his brain to actually comprehend what had just happened but time wouldn't click, wouldn't be real to him. It couldn't be real.
“Claudia Brown?” he said again.
He looked around frantically trying to will her to come out from behind a tree with a big 'ha ha! Fooled you!' But the silence from the team kept on. They really didn't know.
All at once he wanted to just burst out laughing.
