Title: Don't Worry
Word count: 351
Fandom: Life on Mars
Pairing: bit of Gene/Sam
Summary: Sam couldn’t help put think that the whole thing was so much like a 70s movie it wasn’t even funny, except that it was a little because it was really happening.
Author notes: written for a flashslash challenge and it feels sort of like a scene that could be out of a larger fic. Maybe I'll try and write it!

The glow of the headlights nearly blinded him at first. Sam couldn’t help put think that the whole thing was so much like a 70s movie it wasn’t even funny, except that it was a little because it was really happening. Well, whether or not it was really happening was in fact debatable. Still, the ropes digging into his wrists and the kick to his stomach had felt real enough.

Now he was lying on the ground between the two cars, lights flooding the space between.

“Well, here he is,” one of the voices back lit above him said. “Maybe a little worse for the wear but that’s how it is.”

Sam shifted his hands in the ropes trying to see if he could get them free. It didn’t feel like that was going to happen.

“So, where’s my money?” The voice said again.

“Oh, well,” that voice was Gene and relief suddenly flooded through Sam. “You see the thing is we’ve changed the plan.”

Suddenly, there was the sound of running feet and shouting.

“You bloody cop bastards!” someone shouted and a gun went off.

Then everything was frantic. He could see feet dashing in front of him, one person tripping over him. Sam tried to sit up and see what was going on, try to get out of the line of fire, when he was shoved back down.

“Don’t move, Sammy,” Gene said as he blocked Sam from the chaos.

Though everything was noise and wreck around them, the gang bosses shooting at whatever moved and their fellow police officers dodging to safety, Sam smiled.

“Sorry about this,” Sam said with a cough of blood on the ground.

“Don’t you start,” Gene said, running a hand quickly through Sam’s hair. “You’ve scared me enough already.”

Gene’s voice sounded strained and Sam leaned into the touch causing the other to look down.

“That’s what I meant,” Sam said. “Sorry for making you worry.”

Gene sighed and kissed Sam quickly on the head. “Just don’t do it again.”

Sam just grinned. All in a days work for a 1970s cop.
